SM0745: A Suite of Botanical Etudes

A Suite of Botanical Etudes
Hannah Haynes

Cover ImageMy intention with these etudes is that each one can also double as a possible performance piece. Whilst the primary aim was to help the student to practice various shapes and techniques, hopefully the music will also be enjoyable both to play and to listen to.

Each piece can be performed alone. It’s also possible to perform the suite as a whole, or indeed to perform your own “pick and mix” mini suite, by choosing a few contrasting etudes to perform: choose whichever ones you like, and perform them in an order of your own choosing, to tell a story, or create a particular mood or soundscape. Or simply pick your favourites. Feel free to experiment.

Composers Foreword from the score

A Suite of Botanical Etudes

My hope and intention with these etudes is that each one can also double as a possible performance piece. Whilst the primary aim was to help the student to practice various shapes and techniques, hopefully the music will also be enjoyable both to play and to listen to.

These studies are for fully levered harps or for pedal harps. If you play a fully levered harp tuned in Eb major (3 flats), you will be able to play every piece in the suite. The same applies if you play a pedal harp. For pedal harpists and lever harpists where the harp is tuned in 3 flats, where more than one key is available for a study, I suggest you choose to play the version with a flat or several flats in the key signature, as this will allow your harp to ring out more.

If your fully levered harp is tuned in C major, alternative versions in different keys are provided for you, meaning that you will be able to play all the studies except for etude 12. Etude 2 is possible, but will require 2 strings to be retuned at the start of the piece.
