I was keen to write a piece for a wonderful student harpist who is shortly leaving home to take up a place at university. It was the student herself who gave me the idea of the theme: she commented that whenever she visits the university town it is always raining. This composition is to mark many years of happily making music together.

Miniatures on the Theme of Rain is a suite of three very short pieces for lever harp, tuned in Eb major. Whilst intended for players of the 34 string clarsach the music is also playable on a 26 or 27 string instrument, tuned in Eb major, where the instrument’s lowest string is the C below middle C. The only adaptation needed is that the final chord of the suite needs to be played an octave higher than notated.
