Code Crackers Pitch Book 7
Shapes (Part 3)
Hannah Haynes

The Code Crackers series is designed to offer students of any age regular, continuous practice in reading music. Whereas the rhythm series can be used by students learning any musical instrument, the pitch series is designed for students who are learning the harp, and is principally aimed at those learning on a lever harp tuned in Eb major.

The pitch series is designed to give students a great deal of practice in simple note recognition. It is aimed at students who find reading music tricky (or even overwhelming), although the books would also be helpful for any beginner wishing to proceed in a slow and methodical way. Books 1 - 4 give students a chance to practise one thing and one thing only: the act of relating a particular pitch notated on a stave to the corresponding string on their harp, without simultaneously having to deal with other aspects of reading music (such as rhythm, dynamics, fingering, placing, phrasing, lever changes and so on).

From book 5, fingerings, placings, chords and shapes are gradually introduced.

Suggested ways to use this book

1. As the teacher, you could ask the student to play a page that they have not previously prepared. Then identify together whether this is a topic requiring further practice.

2. As the teacher you could give the student a page or two per week to study at home and then ask them to play the pages through for you in the following lesson.

3. As the teacher, choose a 2-page spread. Pick an exercise and play it. Have your student try to identify which exercise you are playing, as quickly as they can. Then swap roles. If you have a student's parent/carer sitting in on the lesson they can join in with the guessing too.

4. Ask your student to identify the note names of any notes requiring ledger lines. Have them show you which strings on their harp they would use to play these pitches.

5. Together talk through the different features of an exercise, such as the clef, key signature, time signature, which intervals or shapes are being used and which fingering to use.
