A Carolean Concerto
for Harp and Strings

Hannah Haynes

A note about scoring:

This piece can either be performed as a harp concerto accompanied by string orchestra, or as a piece of chamber music (a sextet for pedal harp, two violins, one viola, one cello and one double bass)

Notes from the Composer:

Movement one draws inspiration from Rondo form, and explores the theme of contrast.

Movement two is inspired by the breathing practices found in various meditative and spiritual traditions, and seeks to evoke a feeling of spaciousness and timelessness.

Movement three draws on Sonata form, but also has a slight hint of a traditional Scottish air. The start of the main theme (from bar 226) refers back to the harp’s initial solo section at bars 13-16 in movement 1.

This piece of music is called “A Carolean Concerto” because it was completed in September 2022, at the very start of what is being referred to in the UK as the new Carolean era.
