About this Work

Look at all the Pretty Lights
For Laurie
Composed by Sue Rothstein

The story behind this piece

At Christmas time several years ago, my husband heard that his cousin Laurie, who had been bravely battling ALS for some time, probably did not have long.

She was only in her fifties. Her twin sister Linda was going to take her for a car ride to look at all the pretty lights. I was at the piano when my husband told me this. Mainly the music just happened after that, driven alongside an idea of conversations the sisters might have had on this outing:

One saying how lovely the Christmas lights were; the other although frail, trying to be positive. One encouraging and reminiscing about wonderful past memories; the other remembering with happiness, sometimes with sadness and frustration. Both doing their best to be strong for each other, whilst knowing the reality of the situation. Lastly the inevitable, but hopefully positive release, of letting go.

About ALS
ALS, or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. It is the most serious form of motor neuron disease. For many years it was known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, after it ended the career of the well loved baseball player Lou Gehrig. The mission of the ALS Association in the USA is to discover treatments and a cure for ALS, and to serve, advocate for, and empower people affected by ALS to live their lives to the fullest.
