Notes for the Harpist

The two new pieces presented in this book are examples of two popular instrumental forms of traditional Turkish music, the oyun havasi (dance tune) and longa. They can be performed both by lever and pedal harp. Indications of omissions, although infrequent, are shown where necessary to suit the change of levers. The pieces can be played independently, or following eachother in the order presented in the book since they are set in the same makam (1). They can also be accompanied by a bendir (framedrum) to play the usul (2).

Lavender Panna Cotta is a dance tune set in the popular Turkish rhythmic pattern called aksak, a 9/8 with literally a limp. The eight notes of the 9/8 bar are grouped as 2-2-2-3. After three steady groups of two, the last three eight notes at the end of the bar create the illusion of a limp or suspension. Hence the dancing appeal of this pattern. The melodic organization of the tune is basically a set of variations. Inspired by a desert savoured in real life in an Istanbul restaurant, the composer set the tune in a makam called buselik. It is to be performed with good energy and very steady rhythm. If accompanied by percussion, traditionally a bendir, it is to play the aksak usul.

Aksak usul is played as: Düüm-teke-düüm-teek tek

Longa is a favourite instrumental form in Turkish traditional music, characterized by a fast 2/4 with the second and fourth eight notes of the bar slightly accented, which is made possible when accompanied by percussion. Playful and geared towards demonstrating instrumental mastery, the longa does not have a set compositional form. Here, the composer started out with a percussive effect leading into a joyful theme followed by several new ideas. After a succession of new melodic material, the theme is heard again. Diverging away once more, some modulation is introduced with the following melodic sections, receding back to the main theme. Like Lavender Panna Cotta, Longa can be accompanied by a bendir which is to play the nim sofyan usul.

Nim sofyan usul is played as: düm tek-düm tek
