Introduction

Performer, composer and teacher Fraya Thomsen’s enthusiasm for the Scottish small harp was first fuelled during attendance at Fèis Rois in Ullapool. She went on to study Scottish Music and graduated with honours from the RCS in Glasgow.

An international musician, Fraya worked with Fiona Hunter and Cloud 9 during the time of her study and founded musical duo The Duplets with Gillian Fleetwood in 2005. Her music has taken her to such places as Nova Scotia, Mumbai, Europe and the USA where alongside performing she has also had the privilege to run workshops teaching local musicians. Fraya has her own teaching practice and has worked for a wide variety of musical organisations and festivals including the Edinburgh International Harp Festival and Dinan International Harp Meeting, which has inspired and informed the writing and presentation of this collection of harp music.

Her larger compositions include commissions from Distil Scotland and working as composer-in-residence for Ceòl Mòr. Fraya can be heard on various recordings, most recently with The Duplets and Abagail Grey. In 2011 and 2012 she is working as the Musician in Residence with the Fèis Rois.

“Coming from such a strong melody driven musical tradition as Scotland’s, my compositions often highlight the importance / behold in bold melodies while exploring the exciting possibilities of rhythm. I am a strong believer in musical variation, which I enjoy encouraging music student to continue to develop.

Thank you to all the great harp students teachers and musical collaborators that I have worked with over the years for so much inspiration!
Have Fun!”
