About this work & Performance Notes

Water Nymph

There are five parts as follows::-

Harmony 1 & Melody
Harmony 1 & Melody (alternate part for more experienced players)
Harmony 2
Melody & Descant
Melody & Descant (alternate part for more experienced players)

I wrote Water Nymph first as a simple solo (which appears in Harpo Four). That was begging to have a counter-melody / descant added for a duet version. I really enjoy playing that duet with my pupils in lessons, but obviously two players have to shoulder the entire burden of the melodies and the harmonic quaver interplay - so it made sense to create a 3-part version which maintains the intricacy of the duet but allows less experienced players to be involved.

None of this 3-part version is particular demanding, but it’s lovely to play. Wherever the continuous quaver harmony occurs, I’ve presented it with a tails-up / tails-down suggestion for how less skilled players could allocate their hands. That suits a lot of my pupils, but feel free to ignore the suggestion completely!

I’m aware that some groups may have some more experienced players who want to play a more challenging part, so I’ve also included amongst the individual parts versions of the “Melody & Descant” and the “Harmony 1 & Melody” lines that give such players some extra notes to get their hands round. These parts are entirely optional and won’t spoil the piece at all if they’re left out.

I haven’t put any dynamics in because this isn’t a piece with sudden dramatic contrasts or changes of mood. However: ...the piece is in D major, with the “b” section of each verse in B minor. There are times when I feel these passages should sound more subdued, and there are times when I feel the darker tone requires more volume and a marginally more agitato style. Let your heart dictate your interpretation - and obey the indication at the start “...grazioso e espressivo”...
