About this work & Performance Notes

The Risen Sun

There are six parts as follows::-

Harp 1A (lever) and Harp 1A (pedal)
Harp 1B (lever) and Harp 1B (lever)
Harp 2 (pedal or lever)
Harp 3 (pedal or lever)

If you look at the melody in the second half of verse 5, you’ll see where this piece gets its name from: it’s a little snippet of The House of the Rising Sun. You’ll also find that a fragment of the harmonic sequence of that song recurs regularly throughout the piece. Apart from that, the music is completely different, so it’s a case of “homage to” rather than “stealing from”, so if you thought you could shout “Oi! Plagiarism!” you can think again.

The piece is a “4-part harp ensemble”, but the parts themselves are “Harp 1A”, “Harp 1B”, “Harp 2” and “Harp 3”, because the melody is passed niftily back and forth between the top two parts consistently through the piece, effectively making them both Harp 1.

You’ll see that most players have pedal or lever changes throughout the piece, some more than others.
However there are two important points to note:

1) In the first half of verse 5 the frequent chromatic shifts in Harps 1A and 1B might be daunting for some players, especially in the 1A part. Therefore I’ve written alternative simpler 1A and 1B parts for that section (printed at the end of the individual parts).

2) Those simpler parts aren’t compatible with the more advanced versions for those eight bars (67 to 74), and since the melody is passed back and forth between Harp 1A and Harp 1B, all Harp 1A and 1B players will have to play either the simpler version or the more difficult version - you can’t have some players on one and some on the other. (Harps 2 and 3 are unaffected.)

Don’t forget to swing the quavers
