About this work & Performance Notes

Los Pájaros Carpinteros

There are four parts as follows::-

Harp 1
Harp 2
Harp 3
Harp 4

This piece started life as a single short tune towards the end of my beginners’ harp book, Harpo Beginners, under the title Learning Latin (because it was an introduction to Latin American rhythms).

As tends to happen when you’ve got a group of pupils and a popular piece (and a concert coming up), that short melody acquired a simple accompaniment, then a counter melody, then another counter melody and some more accompaniment, then a spot of drumming on the soundboard, a lilting, rather wistful verse in the major, and finally a new title Los Pájaros Carpinteros, which literally means “The Carpenter Birds” in Spanish.

Moving into that lilting, wistful verse in the major key poses no problems for pedal harpists, obviously, but it’s easy for lever harpists too, with a bit of forethought. I’ve marked the places for levers to be changed in all the individual parts, so the thinking has already been done for you...
