About this work & Performance Notes

’Fraid Not

There are three parts as follows::-

Harp 1
Harp 2
Harp 3

The reasons why this piece is called ’Fraid Not are somewhat convoluted. The title came about as the result of a rather bumpy train of thought triggered by reactions to the confident and showy South American dance rhythms of the piece and its beguiling melody, mingled with thoughts about certain meat products that we associate with that part of the world and their devasting environmental impact. Part of me had wanted to give the piece a Spanish title, because that’s what I’ve done for my other Latin American style ensembles (Incógnita, Esperanza, Los Pájaros Carpinteros, and, partially, Tubby’s Tango), but nothing sprang to mind. In preparing this new Creighton’s Collection edition I was mulling over possible Spanish titles again, and found myself thinking (a) about all those cows raised for beef, and (b) the irresistible rhythms of the music that make you want to dance, and I had the appealing vision of all the cows dancing instead of being eaten, and thought “Hmm, what about Los Vacas Bailando...?” A friend even suggested Strictly Vacas Bailando, which I thought was a great idea (although it might be lost on anyone not familiar with British Saturday night television...). Anyway, consider that the subtitle, as I don’t want to dispense with ’Fraid Not, partly because of the sentiment it conveys, and partly because it’s a celebration of the humble and much-misused apostrophe...

This new edition is musically identical to the original Pink edition, but here I have put in all the pedal and lever changes in the Harp 1 part which I previously left to the players’ reading of the accidentals. I have also drawn attention to the occasional groups of three quavers in the Harp 3 part which move parallel to the Harp 1 quavers and should be emphasised slightly. In the Grazioso section from bar 50, whole bars of parallel quavers in the Harp 1 and Harp 2 parts are an obvious feature of the music, so I haven’t felt the need to highlight them specifically.
