Incógnita

There are seven parts as follows::-

Harp 1
Harp 2
Harp 3
High Harmony
Low Harmony
Melody only
The Clappers

Having just written four new ensembles for some harp workshops, my brain temporarily went on strike when it came to thinking of a title for this piece. I knew I wanted something that suited the passionate, almost seductive Latin American vivacity of the music, but the right words didn’t want to come. So I just wrote “Unknown” in the space for the title.

In the instant of doing that, I knew that was exactly what the title had to be. Well, not exactly, because it was the wrong language, but once I’d put it into Spanish, it immediately conveyed an image of an unknown girl on the dance floor, dancing with eyes-shining breathless exuberance.

Put yourself in that dance hall as you play.

I’ve shared out both the melody and the harmony parts throughout the score, so everything is pretty well equally distributed, and there’s no hierarchy within the ensemble. So the terms “Harp 1”, “Harp 2” and “Harp 3” aren’t in any way indications of levels of experience. However...I’ve also provided parts that are just “Melody”, “Low Harmony” and “High Harmony”, in case there are groups or individuals who want to stick to one thing more consistently.

It also sounds great if you’ve got some spare musicians who can add some flamenco-style interweaving clapping to the ensemble. I’ve included a separate part for the clappers.

Finally I should add that the absence of dynamics in the score and parts isn’t an oversight (or laziness): this is a piece that’s so exuberant I don’t want to risk losing that exuberance by arbitrarily prescribing dynamic contrasts. As long as the melody lines are always brought out, please just play with passion and energy.
