Claire Hamilton studied classical harp with David Watkins (Professor at the Guildhall School of Music) and since then has extended her repertoire to include Popular, Celtic and World music. She enjoys being versatile in performance and owns a range of harps to suite different occasions. She plays a beautifully restored Victorian concert harp for formal functions, an electric harp when playing with bands at festivals, and a traditional hand-carved Celtic harp for solo storytelling.
Having an MA in the Bardic Tradition in Ireland, she has researched the old Celtic tales and music, and performed in shows with the bardic theatre group, The Company of Strangers, with whom she has played at numerous theatres and Festivals, toured Wales and performed at the Edinburgh Fringe. She has also been a member of the experimental band Buddha's Tea Party, which featured Eastern European and Asian musical improvisation, and played at festivals and art venues.
Claire has frequently performed both on Concert and Celtic harp at historic homes and castles, and was featured in the TV programme, Collectors Lot, playing a restored early pedal harp. She recentli played at Waterstones bookshop for the launch of the final Harry Potter book. She has given numerous solo performances of Celtic storytelling with harp at festivals in and around Wales, as well as in London. She has played live on several radio programmes and is regularly booked for business conferences and formal occasions. She has many commercial albums to her name and has also published books with accompanying CDs.
Besides performing, Claire also writes and arranges music, being keen to extend the repertoire for Celtic harp. She is particularly interested in exploring the meeting point between old and new musical styles. Her Celtic albums feature unusual re-workings of traditional airs with edgily modern harmonies. She also experiments with bringing harp and words together in a magical combination. Claire is a passionate believer in the powerful and unique voice of the harp and the unexpected mix of mellow sound and deep excitement it can bring to modern ears.
In this album, Claire gives a subtle yet spine-tingling feel to well-known contemporary songs by playing them on her Celtic harp.Instruments: | Harp (accompanied) |
