INTRODUCTION by Skaila Kanga
This work has been commissioned by the Royal Academy of Music as part of their 200th Anniversary celebrations in 2022. It was founded two hundred years ago in 1822 by John Fane and Nicholas-Charles Bochsa, a harpist of great renown! As a former student, Professor of Harp and Head of Department at this historic institution for many decades, I have tried to create a piece based on a vital issue of our time, namely climate change. The performance begins with a narration by the harpist, which describes our human dilemma and hope for future generations. Many friends across the world have translated the narration and I extend my huge thanks to them for their brilliant contribution.
This work is a combination of classical and contemporary styles with freedom for the artist to explore his or her inner musical journey. The harp is basically a resonant instrument with unique overtones and has the versatility of a myriad of emotional and tonal qualities.
BEYOND THE CLOUDS
An Ode to Climate Change
by SKAILA KANGA
Long ago the hills were calm
And sunlight shone through broken clouds.
Fresh breezes filled the clear blue sky
With a warm, enhancing, graceful balm.
We now repeat our daily lives
In cars, boats, trains and planes
Without a thought that what we do
Has caused our planet such great pain.
But over time, the ice caps melt,
Such river flows we have not felt.
The ocean stirs, the wind it roars,
The rains thrash down, for days it pours.
Huge storms attack the land in rage,
The damage caused we cannot gauge.
The mountains heave, the lowlands sink,
We push our planet to the brink.
The factories spew out their evil smoke
To fill the greed of western folk.
What can we do, is it too late?
Has destiny forged our pre-doomed fate?
Perhaps through music, art and science
We can secure our future in defiance
Of forces that seek to destroy the worth
Of the sacred beauty of Mother Earth.
Man must now find the answers.
To change or not to change?
That is the REAL question.....
