From the foreword
As the Prelude in Eb Major owes a debt to Jean-Baptiste Cardon and the G Minor to Thomas Arne, it seems fitting to include a few words here about these composers. I am grateful to Sioned Williams for supplying much of the information on Cardon by kindly making her programme notes available to me. In fact, the final statement in these notes concerning his music goes right to the heart of what I have tried to accomplish in these pieces.
One of their primary purposes is the development of strong technique, and they are intended to serve as etudes while at the same time being rewarding artistically as performance repertoire. My further aim is to make them playable on the Celtic harp as well as the pedal harp so they are accessible to a wider range of harpists. Many prefer the freedom of portability and lower price of the small harp, yet would also like to play “classical”-style music, but they are hindered by the Celtic harp’s lesser note-span and the chromatic limitations imposed by semitone levers. It is my hope that the Preludes will help build a bridge across this gap. BS
