Meltwater

In 1970 my family and I were nearly wiped out in a serious car accident while on holiday in Switzerland—we were driving along a narrow road with a sheer drop of hundreds feet on one side, when a car came around the corner towards us in the middle of the road. My father swerved away from the drop, but our car started to climb upwards across steep stony ground, it suddenly jolted to a stop just at the point when it was about to turn over—if it had done we would most certainly have rolled over into the valley hundreds of feet below.

For days afterwards we were in a state of shock and unable to sleep, we were too nervous to venture beyond the safety of the campsite, but eventually we walked to a nearby cable car station and went up high into the mountains. It was the first time I had ever been above the tree line in the Alps, it was a bright clear sunny day, the snow glistened blindingly, the sky was the deepest clearest blue, the flowers were in swathes of bright blues and reds.

Whether it was the sudden consciousness of the fragility of life of just the clear mountain air I shall never know, but something about that day has stayed with me ever since. I have often returned to the Alps where the bright and clean clarity of the air, the peacefulness and the stunning scenery always takes my breath away.
