Fingering:   The fingering in this music is the fingering I use when playing these tunes. Please try it, but if it doesn’t work for you, you don’t have to use it!

Dynamics:    I have chosen not to include any dynamics in any of the music in this book. I feel that with traditional music, dynamics are something that should be expressed by the player and they will be forever changing. So please try and discover these yourself.

Ornamentation:  I use ornamentation (grace notes, embellishments etc.) when playing the music in this book but have not included it in the notation. Please try and explore your own way of ornamenting the music to put your own ‘accent’ on tunes.

Hailing from the village of Ullapool in the Scottish Highlands, Rachel Hairs eclectic mix of Scottish, Irish and original music is highly influenced from both her time studying a variety of musical styles and her Scots-Irish parentage. This led her to be described as one of the most innovative young musicians to have emerged over the last few years” (Irish Music Review). A 1st class honours graduate of the renowned BA Applied Music degree at The University of Strathclyde, Rachel studied under Corrina Hewat and was awarded The Alexander Stone Award for Excellence due to her outstanding final recital performance on celtic harp.

Since graduating, Rachel has gained great critical acclaim as a performer and composer, and has released two albums Hubcaps and Potholes and The Lucky Smile. She regularly performs internationally, both as a soloist and with her trio of harp/double bass/guitar. A much sought after tutor she has taught and performed at many harp festivals worldwide including The Edinburgh International Harp Festival (Scotland), Harfentreffen (Germany), Rencontres Internationales de Harpe Celtique (Brittany) and Festival d’Arpa de Sentmenat (Spain).

When at home in Scotland she teaches harp at the Music School of Excellence at Douglas Academy in Milnagavie, at the BA Applied Music degree at The University of Strathclyde and for St. James the Great branch of Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Eireann.
