Anthology of English Music for the Harp
Volume 1 1550 - 1650

compiled & edited by David Watkins

With the exception of the pieces by Dowland and Gibbons, the contents of this volume are taken from the Fitzwilliam Virginal Book. This remarkable collection is now preserved in the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge, and contains keyboard pieces by the leading composers and keyboard players of the late sixteenth century. In editing these pieces David Watkins has adhered to the original texts; however he has omitted several decorations which in certain contexts tend to sound rather clumsy on the harp. A trill in a very low register lacks the bite and clarity which one finds in a keyboard instrument, and a complicated decoration in a simple melody can often sound too heavy.
