Meinrad Schmitt was born in Wasserburg am Inn. After graduating from the Munich Academy of Music he studied composition with Harald Genzmer Composition. From 1965 he also taught at the Academy becoming professor of music theory in 1974. In addition from 1979 - 1983 he participated in the "Studio for New Music, Munich". Since 1983, with Renate Mechler-Schmitt, he has written music for the state with the Pegasus Theatre.
