Sonata in C K545
Edited by David Watkins

This famous Sonata (“dite facile”) was composed on the 26th June 1788 and obviously aimed at the gifted amateur. Mozart hoped to boost his income at the time he was working on his last great symphonies. Sadly, the Sonata was not printed until after his death. Its transparency and sophisticated simplicity have attracted amateur and professional performers alike and is not quite as easy as the applied title suggests. However, the work seems ideally suited for the harp both in sound and technique. A manuscript in the hand of François Petrini proves that it was performed on the harp. Petrini was the son of the harpist to Frederick the Great, teacher of Hinner (Marie Antoinette’s teacher) and dedicated many of his compositions to the Princess de Lamballe, the Queen’s best friend. The edition of this Sonata has been worked out from my own ‘Urtext’ copy and the pedalling suited to performance on a single action harp.
