Introduction
This collection of folk songs was composed in six weeks for a CD recorded in l987 by Tommy Reilly, harmonica and Skaila Kanga, harp. It has been re-issued on the Chandos 'Collect' label (CHAN 6643) to commemorate Tommy Reilly's death in the autumn of 2001, and makes a very fine companion to this published collection.
The original idea behind each piece was to take the familiar folk song as a theme and to embellish it in as many different styles as possible. For example, the “Skye Boat Song” reminds us of a gently swaying gondola; “Early One Morning” reflects they hustle and bustle of dawn; “My Love is Like a Red, Red Rose” is in the style of Chopin;“Cherry Ripe” is a sailor's hornpipe and “Dashing Away with the Smoothing Iron” expresses the frustration of an everlasting chore.
Many friends have requested copies of this music over the years so I have decided to adapt the songs for flute (or violin or oboe) and harp. They can be played in any chosen group of songs as a suite or individually. A small group of the pieces are suitable for the clarsach
I dedicate this volume to Tommy Reilly.
