Deborah Henson-Conant - Talking Hands
This album is for my father, Burt Henson, and my mother, Ins Conant, whose voices were the first music for me, whose hands were the first home.
Many thanks to Chieli Minucci for all his input, playing and encouragement throughout this project, with warm appreciation for his wife and family for listening and supporting our work together. Heartfelt thanks for the artistry and personal warmth of the musicians and technicians who lent their talents and their hands to this album, with special thanks to Paul Wickliffe and his ears of gold.
Special thanks to Larry Rosen, Dave Grusin, Carl Griffin, Bud, Mark, Duke, Andy B., and the Art Squad (thanks for letting me get my hands dirty on this one!) and for Erica, Melinda, Deborah, Michael, Michelle, and everyone at GRP who makes these projects not only possible, but great FUN. Extra thanks to the women (no offense to the guys, mind you—but you outnumber us like crazy!) for hanging in there and adding the women's touch to this music business.
For Susan Marcus and Alexander Feldman, who have been beside me with friendship and advice throughout the conception, birth, and baptism of this album, and for my friends and family who cheered from the sidelines, thank you, thank you, thank you.
Grazie also to Brad, Barbara, and all the crew at BSQ “Into The Light” is for the vision of Bernie's Face; “Lazy Lover” and “The Music Box” are for Sylvia, Leo, and Paul who have been listening almost longer than anyone; “California Calypso” is for Lawrence's encouragement and for Nancy and Guido who calypsoed down the isle without me; “The Day It Rained Forever” thanks to Ray Bradbury for his story of that name; ‘And Then He Kissed Me ...' is for Ken Nordine and Fred Katz who taught me that the spoken word has music of its own and that jazz isn’t just for saxophones.
TALKING HANDS is a celebration of the many hands in my life which have held me and comforted me; for those which work and play with me, guide me when I’m uncertain, pull me along, push me forward, hold me when I awaken afraid, and itt me when I stumble. For these hands and the spirits within them I dedicate this album and I give deepest thanks for my own hands which help me to say what I feel and what I hear.
—Deborah Henson-Conant
I would like to thank Larry Rosen and Carl Griffin for their artistic support once again! Also, I would like to extend my gratitude to my family whose encouragement made this project a success in so many ways.
—Chieli Minucci
